NO SHADOW, SO... EARLY SPRING! HAPPY GROUNDHOG DAY

On this February 2nd, Brownie Groundhog and February Fox 

wishes you all a happy groundhog day!

And good news, Punxsutawney Phil, most popular Brownie's cousin, 

didn't see any shadow this morning, so he predicted an early spring!

Brownie is character I created some time ago that became the main character of a picture book: "Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox". This book was the result of a beautiful team work, a story written by Susan Blackaby and published by Sterling Publishing.  You can read more about it here. 

This year we've been working in the new adventures of Brownie and Fox, along with a new pal. So more news coming soon!

THE MOST TERRIFYING

"L'amour qu'on porte", a picture book I illustrated published by Éditions Milan,  was mentioned in The Guardian in an article about terrifying french children's books. Seems that the writer didn't read the book at all, but anyway,  it's quite an honor!

LA VENTANA DEL GABINETE

"Ramas, arbustos y bichos" es el nombre de la instalación diseñada para el espacio "La ventana del gabiente" de Gris, en Valencia.

Las obras que se pueden ver tras las ramas  de la instalación son tres originales del libro "Los bichos bola".  

En el taller de Gris también tienen serigrafías a la venta.

La instalación se podrá ver hasta el 30 de marzo.

"Branches, shrubs and bugs" is the name of this installation specially designed for "The window cabinet" at Taller Gris, in Valencia.

The works taht can be seen behind the branches of the installation are three originals of my book  "Los bichos bola".

The installation can be seen until March 30.

LOS BICHOS BOLA

¡Recién salido del horno!

La editorial los cuatro azules presenta como novedad de esta temporada "Los bichos bola", la historia de dos hermanos y una excursión secreta al bosque.  El texto es de Luisa Fontán Bos y las ilustraciones de servidora. 

Todavía no he tenido el libro entre mis manos, pero parece que el trabajo de impresión es impecable y que el papel es de esos que huelen bien y da gusto tocar.  ¡Así que pronto otro post con fotos!

Freshly baked!

Los cuatro azules has just released "Los bichos bola".  I had the pleasure to put in images this text written by Luisa Fontán, a "coming-of-age" thrilling tale about two siblings who get deep into the forest and find some unexpected adventures that should keep in secret between both of them. 
I still have not seen the printed book, but I've heard it's been beautifully printed, I will soon post some pics!

BROWNIE GROUNDHOG AND THE FEBRUARY FOX

2 de febrero. En mi estudio de Barcelona, a pesar de estar muy lejos de Punxsutawney y de no haber ni rastro de nieve, hoy se va a celebrar el día de la marmota.
Y es que acabo de recibir mis ejemplares de "Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox"!

Este álbum ilustrado nació de una manera un tanto particular. Hace tiempo (ocho años
ya?) empecé a trabajar en la historia de una marmota que despertaba de su hibernación antes de tiempo. Del proceso surgieron estas ilustraciones de la marmota matando el tiempo ella solita mientras espera la llegada de la primavera:

Esta serie de 5 ilustraciones (óleo y grafito) fue seleccionada en la Muestra de la Feria del Libro de Bologna, mis editores americanos de Sterling Publishing las vieron y me propusieron hacer un libro con esta marmota como protagonista. Como todavía no había un texto escrito ni mucho menos escrito en inglés, se decidió buscar a un escritor que creara una trama a partir de los dibujos de este personaje. La escritora escogida fue Susan Blackaby. Al cabo de bastante tiempo,  cuando ya casi no me acordaba de este proyecto, me enviaron el texto de Susan, que resultó ser increíble, brillante, inteligente y divertido. De paso, a la marmota (Brownie Groundhog) le salió un "co-starring": un zorrillo flacucho y hambriento (February Fox).  


Este es el resumen (en inglés) de la historia que aparece en la chaqueta del libro:

"On the second day of February, a groundhog named Brownie wakes up. She shoves aside the fluff of snow blocking her door. Her shadow stretches across the frosted field.

Brownie stomps her foot. "Phooey!" she says. "Six more weeks of winter!"

But winter is the least of Brownie's troubles. A hungry fox is hot on her trail, and he certainly doesn't plan to wait until spring for his next meal. When clever Brownie finds a way to outfox him, she is surprised to discover that an unusual new friendship_and the first signs of spring_appear where she leasts expects them"

THE ORIGINAL ART 2010



Esta muestra selecciona las mejores ilustraciones de libros para niños del año. El "Museum of American Illustration" en la "Society of Illustrators" acoge la exposición de originales desde el 20 de octubre hasta el 24 de Noviembre.

Y "Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox" publicado por Sterling Publishing fue seleccionada!

AZUL

Ayer se presentó en Barcelona el nuevo sello editorial "El Jinete Azul".

Pude hojear los títulos que han editado hasta ahora, entre ellos el primer álbum

de Asun Balzola: "Historia de un erizo", que se editó por primera vez en 1978 y si no me equivoco había quedado descatalogado. El libro es increíble, te puedes quedar horas embobada mirando las brillantes manchas de acuarela.

Por otro lado, para celebrar el nacimiento del sello se ha editado un librito de presentación con la colaboración de un montón de ilustradores, cada uno ha hecho su versión de un caballito azul. Este es el mío.
